1. Recruiting

Tee Martin has a solid history of developing talent and quite a bit of success when it comes to winning. But there’s no denying the fact that the biggest reason Jeremy Pruitt brought him on is his ability to recruit.

This is not news. Martin has been an elite recruiter for years now, and he most recently won the 247Sports recruiter of the year for the USC Trojans back in February of 2016. But he’s actually won it twice. The guy easily brings top talent to wherever he is, and that’s a big deal.

Rocky Top Insider noted on Twitter that he was the primary or secondary recruiter for 11 five-stars and 26 four-stars on 247Sports during his career. And with experience coaching at Morehouse and then in high school in Atlanta before hims time in FBS and especially at USC in California, Martin now has connections in two elite recruiting states.

Seriously, you can’t underestimate the fact that he brings California connections to Rocky Top and strengthens their presence in the state of Georgia. The state of Tennessee is not a terrible place for recruiting either, and Martin is clearly a positive addition there as the last quarterback to win any championship with the state institution.

Add in the fact that he’s from Alabama, and Martin brings a strong recruiting presence to three major SEC recruiting states states plus California and Ohio, where he would’ve developed some connections while coaching with the Kentucky Wildcats. That’s huge for Tennessee football and Pruitt, who wants to be able to go national but secure local recruits when they are good enough.

Simply put, Tennessee football got a huge steal with Martin coming home because of his recruiting prowess. Pruitt has consistently looked for position coaches who can build those pipelines, and very few have done it better than Martin. As a result, he’s a major pickup, and Vols fans everywhere can celebrate more than just the fact that they brought home their championship quarterback.
