More from All for Tennessee

More important than even Peyton Manning in this game was Britton Colquitt. The tradition of the Colquitt family and Tennessee football as Punter U finally received some vindication with a Super Bowl Championship in Super Bowl 50 between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers.

This game was bound to be a defensive struggle from the start, and that put more pressure on Colquitt than ever to deliver. He did just that with one of the best punted games in the history of the Super Bowl. With all former Vols fans desperately wanting Manning to go out with a ring, Colquitt was the one who helped his fellow letterman do that. He was as crucial as that Denver defense.

Colquitt had eight punts for 367 yards, averaging 45.9 yards per punt. Two of his punts were nailed inside the 20-yard line, and he consistently kept the Panthers pinned deep. In fact, his two punts inside the 20 were key.

The first set up the fumble-touchdown the Broncos had early in the game to go up 10-0. His second punt inside the 20 pinned Carolina so deep that they couldn’t orchestrate a late scoring drive going into halftime in time. Simply put, Colquitt was critical, and that’s why he’s so high on this list.
