Tennessee football National Signing Day 2019 primer: Vols schedule, live updates
National Signing Day 2019 is here for Tennessee football. Here are all the live updates surrounding the Volunteers and their recruiting class.
It’s finally here. After months of relentless work, Jeremy Pruitt is set fo complete his first full recruiting class as Tennessee football’s head coach. The Vols have a middle of the road ranking in the SEC heading into National Signing Day, and they have a Top 20 class in the nation.
However, there are significant needs for them to fill and numerous players they are still targeting. So here we are, as we do every year, with our real time updates on National Signing Day. This page will track who’s committed, who has signed, and what the UT targets do throughout the day.
Live blog
- 5:08 p.m.-Inside linebacker Chris Russell commits to and signs with Texas A&M Aggies. The Dyersburg, Tenn. prospect is a three-star on Rivals at 6’1″ 220 pounds. After Lakia Henry decommitted from the Vols, Jeremy Pruitt and his staff began to target Russell, but they were a bit too late and couldn’t get ahead of A&M or the Arkansas Razorbacks. The good news for them is that Henry To’oto’o’s commitment offsets losing out on Russell.
- 4:08 p.m.-Offensive lineman Darnell Wright commits to and signs with the Vols. Wright, a five-star offensive tackle, was always supposed to be the crown jewel of the class. At 6’6″ 300 pounds, he was always trending towards Rocky Top but waited until National Signing Day to commit. The Huntington High School product out of Huntington, W. Va. is Tennessee football’s highest rated non-junior college recruit since Kahlil McKenzie committed in 2015.
- 3:38 p.m.-Cornerback Kenney Solomon commits to and signs with Vols. A three-star on Rivals, Solomon is a 6’0″ 170-pound prospect out of Myrtle Beach, S.C. who picked UT over numerous schools, most notably the Louisville Cardinals.
- 3:20 p.m.-Linebacker Henry To’oto’o commits to the Vols over the Alabama Crimson Tide. To’oto’o is a four-star out of De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. The 6’2″ 210-pound prospect fills a huge void for Jeremy Pruitt at inside linebacker on Rocky Top.
- 2:42 p.m.-Safety Jammie Robinson commits to the South Carolina Gamecocks. A four-star out of Lee County High School in Leesburg, Ga., Robinson is a 5’11” 190-pound prospect whom the Vols targeted late in the process. They couldn’t make up the ground South Carolina had already gained with him.
- 10:43 a.m.-Wide receiver Dywan Griffin commits to the UTSA Roadrunners. Griffin was not rated on Rivals but is a three-star on other services. He is a 6’2″ 180-pound prospect coming out of Landry Walker High School in New Orleans, La.
- 10:10 a.m.-Five-star wide receiver George Pickens flips his commitment from the Auburn Tigers to the Georgia Bulldogs. Pickens was another target for the Vols, but assumptions were that the 6’4″ 190-pound prospect out of Hoover, Ala. would remain with the Tigers. As a result, his flip to the Dawgs is quite a surprise.
- 9:57 a.m.-Three-star defensive tackle LeDearrius Cox flips his commitment to the Ole Miss Rebels. Cox, a 6’4″ 310-pound prospect from Mobile, Ala., had been committed to UT for 10 months, but other schools were making a late play for him. His flip leaves the Vols with only three defensive linemen in its 2019 class, and that’s after losing all their top talent at the position this past year.
