Tennessee football got another positive recruiting sign Monday. The Volunteers made the cut for four-star wide receiver EJ Williams out of Phenix City, Ala.

As Jeremy Pruitt continues to go national, he’s not going to avoid getting into the state that made him. Tennessee football is now firmly in competition for an Alabama wide receiver, and they are going all out to get the guy.

Never mind the fact that this particular player is right on the Alabama-Georgia line, in the heart of the Auburn-Georgia rivalry. The Vols are managing to stay afloat after a 5-7 season for him among some of the much more successful programs in recent years.

Four-star wide receiver EJ Williams out of Phenix City, Ala. announced on Twitter Sunday that Tennessee football is in his top seven. The Vols were in there with the LSU Tigers, Clemson Tigers, Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators and Oklahoma Sooners.

Ranked the No. 112 player nationally, the No. 25 player at his position and the No. 3 player in the state of Alabama, Williams comes from Central High School. He stands at 6’3″ 183 pounds, already showing great size to play receiver in the SEC.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball and the Rivals Fan Future Cast has Dabo Swinney and Clemson as the overwhelming favorite to land Williams. Meanwhile, the Rivals Future Cast has it as a split between Clemson and Auburn.

However, Grant Ramey of GoVols247 reports Williams told 247Sports’ Keith Niebuhron Saturday that Alabama was probably the school at the top of this list. So securing him is going to be an uphill climb for the Vols.

Some good news for them is the fact that Tee Martin and Derrick Ansley are the two primary recruiters for Williams. Given Martin’s previous success coaching receivers and his connections to the states of Alabama and Georgia along with Ansley’s connections to specifically Alabama, that is a good combination to go after Williams.

And don’t forget, Pruitt also has direct connections to both Alabama and Georgia. So Williams being on the border of both states is perfect for Tennessee football to pursue him given its new coaching staff.
