Tennessee football: Vols in top 12 for 5-star 2020 TE Darnell Washington
Tennessee football recruiting made the cut for talent from Nevada. The Volunteers are in the top 12 for Las Vegas, Nev. tight end Darnell Washington.
Tight ends are traditionally not highly touted recruits. However, Jeremy Pruitt has spent a certain amount of time targeting the few highly touted players at the position, including junior college transfer Dominick Wood-Anderson. It’s now boding well for Tennessee football.
The Vols made the cut for a 2020 tight end from Nevada who is a rare talent. Darnell Washington, who hails from Desert Pines High School in Las Vegas, trimmed his list to 12 schools on Monday, and Tennessee football was among them.
Other schools included the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Auburn Tigers, the Clemson Tigers, the Florida State Seminoles, the Florida Gators, the Georgia Bulldogs, the LSU Tigers, the Miami Hurricanes, the Michigan Wolverines, the Oregon Ducks and the Penn State Nittany Lions. Washington announced his list on Twitter.

A five-star on Rivals, Washington stands at 6’7″ 255 pounds and is ranked the No. 17 player nationally and the No. 1 player at his position and in the state of Nevada. He has incredible size, even for a tight end, and is a perfect fit not just for what Pruitt runs but for the type of offenses Jim Chaney is capable of utilizing.
This is another case of Pruitt doing two things: trying to go national with his recruiting and placing a heavy emphasis on physical tight ends. On top of that, the Vols did just get another five-star named Darnell in their 2019 class.
With Wood-Anderson a rising senior and Austin Pope a rising junior, Pruitt clearly wants to restock the cupboard at this position for the future. Washington would certainly do that, and given the state of the program, Tennessee football can sell playing time.
Making the top 12 is clearly not a huge deal, and Alabama is the favorite on the 247Sports Crystal Ball to land him with Georgia in second. But if Chaney involves Wood-Anderson and the tight ends in general in the passing game this year, which Tyson Helton sometimes failed to do, then Washington could definitely give the Vols more of a look.
