Tennessee football: Illinois OL Javontez Spraggins commits to Vols for 2020
Tennessee football recruiting added another offensive lineman. Javontez Spraggins of East St. Louis, Ill. committed to Jeremy Pruitt and the Volunteers.
After a historically great offensive line recruiting class in 2019, Jeremy Pruitt is not settling down for 2020. And on Friday afternoon, he secured another major pickup for Tennessee football on that front for next year.
Javontez Spraggins of East St. Louis, Ill. ended up committing to the Vols. He became the seventh commitment of the year for Rocky Top and their second offensive lineman. Spraggins is also the first commitment from the Midwest, although if you count Dominic Bailey of Baltimore, he’s the second from Big Ten country.
A three-star on Rivals, Spraggins comes out of East St. Louis High School. He is the No. 9 ranked player at his position and the No. 13 ranked player in his home state. Standing at 6’3″ 300 pounds, he announced his commitment on Twitter.
Spraggins joins two-star Will Albright of Greeneville, Tenn. as the two linemen committed to Tennessee football for 2020 at this point. And both of them are centers as well, which helps Pruitt restock the Vols in the middle after Brandon Kennedy graduates this year and Ryan Johnson graduates next year.
In high school, Spraggins has been listed as a center on Rivals, but he can also play guard, making him a very valuable interior lineman. He has proven his ability to be a producer at that level. Here is a look at his highlight reel.

As you can see, Spraggins has a healthy level of athleticism and awareness, particularly when it comes to pass protection. But he has overwhelmed people with size, so the question does arise if he can keep up that play in the SEC.
However, if he needs to develop, Pruitt has done a good job stocking up the line to give him time. Will Friend is known for developing linemen as well, and new offensive coordinator Jim Chaney specializes in coaching linemen.
Simply put, Spraggins is going to a great place to develop up front. And despite him only being a three-star, he is a great fit for Tennessee football with his size and ability to play inside. So there’s a great chance he becomes a valuable contributor for Rocky Top in the future.
His commitment is a huge June pickup for Rocky Top, and with Albright and Bailey already committed, Pruitt truly is stacking up the trenches. Jordan Davis counts their too since he’s listed as a defensive end. But Spraggins is the biggest pickup for the Vols at this point in terms of size.
