Tennessee football: 2020 in-state athlete Darion Williamson commits to Vols
Tennessee football picked up another commitment Wednesday. 2020 Brownsville, Tenn. athlete Darion Williamson chose the Volunteers.
They may have lost out on one of their top targets at quarterback in Haynes King, but Tennessee football did secure another commitment for its 2020 recruiting class Wednesday. And in this case, they were able to add another in-state prospect.
Three-star athlete Darion Williamson committed to the Vols. Williamson is listed as an athlete out of Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tenn., the same place Emmit Gooden came from before heading to junior college.
Standing at 6’3″ 190 pounds, Williamson is commitment No. 12 for Tennessee football’s 2020 class. Forecasts have had UT as the heavy favorite to land him for a while. He announced his decision to join the Vols on Twitter.
Despite being listed as an athlete, Williamson is an outside linebacker and a wide receiver, and his primary position in college is likely to be receiver. That his commitment came after Jeremy Pruitt’s recruiting pitch to receivers on Tuesday at SEC Media Days may not be a coincidence.
Obviously, Williamson already has great size as a wideout. Tennessee football clearly needs more bodies at receiver for the future with four seniors as major players this year in Jauan Jennings, Marquez Callaway, Brandon Johnson and Tyler Byrd along with two juniors in Josh Palmer and Jordan Murphy.

Guys like Ramel Keyton, Jerrod Means and Jacquez Jones are clearly the future of the position, and Pruitt had already secured three-star Jimmy Calloway for 2020 and four-star Jordan Mosley for 2021. But he clearly needed more bodies, and Williamson gives him that.
Now, there is a bit of a need at outside linebacker as well, and Pruitt did detail that at SEC Media Days. But the Vols have enough proven bodies to set that position up among starters for the next three years. And given Williamson’s size, he’s probably going to be much more effective in college as a receiver. Here’s a look at his highlight reel.
As you can see, Williamson truly is an athlete in that his highlight reel focuses on his abilities on both sides of the ball. One thing that does show is his willingness to get physical if, as we expect he plays receiver. He is clearly able to go over the middle to catch passes and take hits.
Simply put, Tennessee football clearly got a guy who brings a good bit of potential to Rocky Top. He is certainly a great pickup for the Vols, who have a top 30 recruiting class right now but need to do better. Williamson could be one of those major future steals. Jeremy Pruitt has been decent on that front with skill players. Perhaps Williamson could be the next guy he finds like that.
