This SEC game features two desperate teams who are both on two-game losing streaks and have fallen to 0-2 in SEC play. The loser basically ends up falling out of the bowl game picture for at least a little while.
Of the two, the South Carolina Gamecocks are more desperate. Will Muschamp’s team is 1-3 after a 34-14 loss to the Missouri Tigers and that loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels to open the season is looking more and more like a killer. He needs his defense to finally step up this weekend to win for his team to have a shot at a bowl.
The Kentucky Wildcats, meanwhile, still have a shot at a bowl even with a loss because of their softer schedule. But Mark Stoops’s young team does not want to fall to 2-3 this year. They should have beaten the Florida Gators at home and messed up not cashing in on a reeling Mississippi State Bulldogs team last week. So they need a win Saturday.
Prediction
South Carolina’s desperation at home on a Saturday night makes the difference. Muschamp has a decent team, so the Gamecocks should not be this bad. Expect them to control the game from start to finish, and in typical SEC fashion by two defensive coordinators, it will be a low-scoring game. So take S.C. to cover, but take the under.
