1. Quarterbacks: A

Number of commitments: 2

  • Harrison Bailey

5-star; 6’4″ 220 pounds; Marietta, Ga.; Marietta High School

  • Jimmy Holiday (Athlete)

3-star; 6’1″ 180 pounds; Flora, Miss.; Madison Central High School

This one’s pretty simple. Tennessee football returns a two-year starter at quarterback in Jarrett Guarantano. The Vols have two backups in Brian Maurer and JT Shrout who, for all their concerns, have both started as well and now bring some experience.

Of those three, only Guarantano will be gone after 2020. In response, Jeremy Pruitt lured a five-star pro-style quarterback to Rocky Top in Harrison Bailey. So by that nature alone, the Vols already offset their loss and did it with quality as high as possible also. Bailey is the top recruit in the class for UT.

But to add some insurance, Pruitt brought in a dual-threat quarterback. Jimmy Holiday is a three-star athlete who actually can play quarterback. That’s his primary position. As a result, the Vols are in great shape with him potentially being a fourth body. He may move to receiver, but for now, he definitely gives the Vols another element at this position.

So from a purely recruiting perspective, Jim Chaney now will have more quarterbacks in 2021 than he had in 2019. One of them will be the more highly rated prospect than anybody on the 2019 roster was coming out of college. And he finally has some variety with an added dual-threat quarterback if that’s the route he wants to go.

Simply put, quarterback all worked out for Tennessee football with these two guys. Bailey is the star of the class and the reason it reached the top 10, and he could compete for a starting role even this year. There’s nothing to complain about here, which is why it’s No. 1 and gets an A.
