1. No track record of developing nationally recognized FBS talent

As you can see, the major concerns with Tennessee football moving Brian Niedermeyer over to tight ends coach is the fact that he has a lack of a track record. That applies with this primary concern as well.

More from All for Tennessee

Of all those lack of track record concerns, the biggest one actually does take into account his experience coaching offense and defense. But it also makes him a victim because he actually doesn’t have enough of a sample size for us to judge him too harshly on this. Still, his track record as the Vols’ tight ends coach matters.

These last two years are the first two years he had an on-field role with an FBS program. And he did not produce any All-SEC talent or All-American talent. Dominick Wood-Anderson was a solid tight end, but he was a four-star junior college transfer lured away from Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, and he never developed into a nationally or even regionally recognized star.

We mentioned on the positives that maybe replacing him as tight ends coach was a positive to moving him over to inside linebackers coach. Well, on the negative side, maybe he isn’t able to develop elite talent at this level. Sure, he could do it with East Texas Baptist, where he produced two All-Americans as the receivers coach in 2014. But this is different.

Rocky Top is simply getting a guy with a very limited track record. Niedermeyer is likely to work out well for Tennessee football, but the numerous unknowns can indeed be a concern. We had to call them out here. Just take them all with a grain of salt.
