Combining those things with a thrilling finish made this the best win of the year for Kellie Harper’s first team. Heading into the game, UT had just beaten the Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators and was on a three-game winning streak. Here was a chance to beat Alabama, Florida and Georgia in succession. At the time, they were also on a five-game losing streak to the Tide.
At 14-3 and 4-1 in the SEC, this was their best chance to end it, as Alabama was 11-6 and 1-3 in the SEC. The end was thrilling. Despite a seven-point lead at halftime, Alabama fought back and made it close heading into the fourth. Then, they kept up the fight in the fourth and took the lead late. The two traded buckets in the last minute.
Trailing 63-62 with a second left, Rennia Davis drilled a long three to give the Lady Vols the win, ending the streak and giving them a quality victory. Davis had a rough night, missing three of four free throws, so Jordan Horston was the star with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and even four blocks. However, Davis made the key play when it counted.
In the end, Alabama finished as a top 100 RPI team with an 18-12 final record. That made this a quality enough victory that, combined with its thrilling finish, earned it a spot atop these rankings. And hey, beating Alabama is always thrilling on Vol Nation.
