More potentially good news came for Tennessee football on the recruiting trail Tuesday. The Volunteers made the top eight for Jeremiah Williams.

Jeremy Pruitt has a knack for targeting elite defensive prospects and targeting talent within the state of Alabama. As a result, it was no surprise that with him on the job, Tennessee football made the top eight for another top 250 player, this time an edge rusher.

A four-star on Rivals who is listed as an outside linebacker, Williams hails from Ramsay High School in Birmingham, where Pruitt is probably very familiar with targeting talent. At 6’4″ 225 pounds, he is listed as the No. 220 ranked player overall, the No. 16 ranked player at his position and the No. 6 ranked player in the state of Alabama.

Joining Tennessee football in his top eight are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners and Nebraska Cornhuskers. He announced his list on Twitter.

The sample size right now is too small when it comes to predictions to see where he would land. Right now, there is only one prediction on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, and Alabama is that prediction. Nobody has made a prediction on the Rivals Future Cast, although Auburn is the favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast.

According to multiple recruiting services, including VolQuest and GoVols247, Williams said that he was told by the Vols coaches he’d be able to play all four linebacker positions. That suggests he could be more than an edge rusher, and it could be a major advantage for UT when it comes to recruiting him.

Obviously, though, it’s hard to lure elite players out of Birmingham if Nick Saban truly wants them. That’s one hour away from Tuscaloosa, and he would also be as much of a fit for Saban’s system. As a result, making the top eight still leaves a long way to go for Tennessee football. However, it is at least a start for the Vols.
