Tennessee football: Vols WR Marquez Callaway signs with New Orleans Saints
After two players were taken in the 2020 NFL Draft, Tennessee football had a few free agents sign deals. New Orelans signed a key Volunteers wide receiver.
Certain places have a history of giving a shot to former Tennessee football players. New Orlean is one of those places. With wide receiver Robert Meachem being drafted by them in 2007 and then Alvin Kamara being the steal of 2017 by them, finding a steal at wide receiver would be the story.
Well, Marquez Callaway may be that steal. Despite not being taken in the 2020 NFL Draft, Callaway signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent when it was all over. He was the first former Vol to ink a deal after the draft ended.
Callaway was second on the team in receiving this past year to Jauan Jennings, but the 6’1″ 205-pound prospect was always valued as a prospect who could develop. Multiple reports discussed his signing early on, but then Tennessee football’s Twitter account confirmed it.

In 2019, Callaway had 30 receptions for 635 yards and six touchdowns. He led the team in receiving in 2018, and he had a punt return for a touchdown in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Simply put, he is a playmaker.
With solid fundamentals, Callaway also has great hands and enough football instincts. The guy was one of the most shifty players on the Vols over the past four years with the ball in his hands. He just needs to develop.
New Orleans is a great place for Callaway to do that. Sean Payton’s pass-happy offense is bound to give a chance to elite receivers, and even if he only has one year left, Drew Brees is the perfect quarterback to work with.
Just last year, New Orleans found a steal in an undrafted free agent from Rocky Top, as defensive lineman Shy Tuttle emerged. We already discussed the value of Kamara. They have also kept an eye on Colton Jumper for a while.
As a result, it’s safe to say Callaway is going to a place that values overlooked Tennessee football prospects. That’s all he can ask for, and going to a pass-happy offense that values skill players only further benefits him.
