As if Tennessee football recruiting wasn’t making enough of a splash, the Volunteers are among the leaders for two other high-profile prospects.

The story of Tuesday was Tennessee football securing a four-star out of Georgia, it’s third straight day securing a commitment away from a state where an arch-rival plays. However, even as that got them into the top five, there was more news about prospects they are making a strong push for, which could even further boost their class.

According to Austin Nivison of GoVols247, 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong says the Vols have the inside track to land dual-threat quarterback Kaidon Salter out of Cedar Hill High School in Cedar Hill, Texas. A three-star on Rivals, Salter is set to announce his decision May 10.

Initially, the Baylor Bears were overwhelming favorites to land Salter. Baylor, Tennessee football and the Auburn Tigers are his top three. Wiltfong says that Salter had a visit with UT that went very well just before the NCAA suspended all in-person recruiting activities.

Right now, Rocky Top is the unanimous favorite on the Rivals Future Cast to land the 6’1″ 185-pound quarterback, who is ranked as a top 20 player at his position and a top 60 player in the state of Texas. They are now a favorite by a large majority on the 247Sports Crystal Ball as well, and the Rivals Fan Future Cast has them as a favorite by a plurality.

While they hold a solid lead to add another quarterback, news broke Tuesday that the Vols are also making a strong push for a junior college running back who comes out of South Carolina. Tiyon Evans, who currently is with Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan., is initially from Hartsville, S.C. At 5’9″ 225 pounds, he is not yet rated on Rivals.

In general, the South Carolina Gamecocks have been the favorite to land him, including unanimously on the 247Sports Crystal Ball and by a large majority on the Rivals Fan Future Cast. However, there are no predictions yet on the Rivals Future Cast, and Tennessee football could be making a play.

According to an article by Phil Kornblut of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal in Spartanburg, S.C., Evans has both the Vols and Gamecocks “clearly” at the top of his list. He said UT is pushing hard for him, and he is in talks with them about an official visit.

Once the visit happens, the momentum South Carolina has can change, although they are trying to get him in for an official visit as well. Either way, UT being in his top two right now is great news for Jeremy Pruitt and co.

With the momentum they have gained on the recruiting trail, Tennessee football is likely to continue to make pushes for elite prospects. Adding Salter and Evans would increase their footprint in SEC states, as they would then have a player from six of the 11 states. Pruitt really is expanding Tennessee football’s reach once again, and this is just another example.
