Over three months after National Signing Day, Tennessee football recruiting has news on Zachary Evans. The Volunteers target joined the TCU Horned Frogs.

Well, the red-hot recruiting news for Tennessee football had to come to an end at some point. It still hasn’t changed for 2021, but the Vols did lose out on an elite target for 2020 over three months after National Signing Day.

Five-star Texas running back Zachary Evans out of North Shore High School in Houston has joined the TCU Horned Frogs, according to Jeremy Clark of 247Sports. His commitment ends a months-long saga that had everybody related to it waiting in limbo.

Evans had initially committed to the Georgia Bulldogs and even signed a Letter of Intent. However, he then asked out of it, and it was late enough that he would miss the deadline to sign with a school in February. As a result, he had an extended deadline, but the coronavirus cancelations eliminated that deadline, meaning he had an indefinite amount of time to make a decision.

All the while, Tennessee football, was among the top schools recruiting the 6’0″ 195-pound running back. At the height of all of this, Jeremy Pruitt replaced running backs coach David Johnson with former Vol Jay Graham, who was recruiting Evans when he was with the Texas A&M Aggies. That appeared to potentially give UT an edge.

Signing Day came and went, and the Vols finished with a top 10 class. Evans’ commitment would have propelled it into the top five. However, with the news of him enrolling at TCU, Rocky Top has clearly lost out on him.

It’s not too big of a deal, though. Rocky Top has Eric Gray for at least two more years, added two running backs in its 2020 class and just added four-star running back Cody Brown to its 2021 class. As a result, they are in prime position to replace Tim Jordan, Ty Chandler and Carlin Fils-Aime after this season.

Of course, Evans would have been a major addition and left no questions at that position, but him not committing doesn’t mean Tennessee football is in trouble. In fact, he may not have committed because of how deep the Vols are about to be at that position. Either way, this finalizes Rocky Top’s 2020 class, which finishes with 23 commitments and a No. 7 ranking on Rivals.
