Tennessee football’s top five place kickers in history
On pure reliability, there’s no denying what John Becksvoort did. He was never going to blow you away with his leg power, but he was always automatic for Tennessee football when needed. As a result, he makes this list.

Becksvoort was an All-American his junior year with the Vols. That season, he nailed 12 of 13 field goal attempts for a rate of 92.3 percent. He also nailed all 59 extra point attempts. The attempts were so limited because of how proficient the Vols’ offense was. They scored lots of touchdowns, but Becksvoort was always there when they needed him.
Beyond just that year, though, Becksvoort went all four years without missing an extra point. He set the record for consecutive PATs without a miss, attempting 161 of those during that time. And yes, extra points are crucial.
Remember, Becksvoort was the guy who added the game-winning extra point as a freshman when the Vols came back from 31-7 down to beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the road. That counts as much as anything. After all, Notre Dame was a top 10 team, and an extra point like that is similar to a game-winning field goal.
As a result, Becksvoort is Tennessee football’s greatest place kicker in school history. His consistency and that amazing year of 1993 are enough for us to put him at the top of the list, but the list is debatable.
