Tennessee basketball staff meeting with 2021 five-star Kennedy Chandler
Rick Barnes’ Tennessee basketball Volunteers staff scheduled a meeting with a 2021 five-star.
They may have lost out on Georgetown Hoyas transfer Mac McClung, but Tennessee basketball is still making strides with an elite prospect for 2021. It appears that the Vols are set to be one step closer to securing a pickup for that prospect.
Five-star point guard Kennedy Chandler out of Briarcrest High School in the Memphis area was scheduled to meet with Barnes and his coaching staff Wednesday night.
At 6’0″ 165 pounds, Chandler is the No. 1 ranked player at his position and top 10 player nationally. Jake Weingarten of Stock Risers initially tweeted out the news about the scheduled meeting between the two parties.

Currently, the Rivals Future Cast has Tennessee basketball as a unanimous favorite to land Chandler, and the Rivals Fan Future Cast has them as a majority favorite. However, the 247Sports Crystal Ball has the Duke Blue Devils as a unanimous favorite to land him, so there is definitely a real fight for the guy.
Should Chandler commit, he’d be joining a deep group of point guards with Santiago Vescovi and Victor Bailey Jr. likely to be on the roster in 2021-2022. However, with John Fulkerson, E.J. Anosike and Yves Pons all set to be gone by then, there’s a very good chance Barnes decides to go small by that point. As a result, Chandler would be a great pickup.
Of course, that all depends on the other players Barnes adds, as UT has nobody committed for 2021 yet. Still, this incoming recruiting class of Keon Johnson, Jaden Springer and Corey Walker Jr. along with potentially Malachi Wideman could be down to just one player next year if Johnson and Springer are one-and-dones and Wideman decides to stick with football.
Add in the fact that Josiah-Jordan James was once a five-star recruit, and Tennessee basketball could lose a lot of talent from this upcoming year’s team. That would make guys like Vescovi, Bailey and the developmental post players, including Olivier Nkamhoua, Drew Pember and Uros Plavsic, the key guys for that season. As a result, Chandler could be very valuable.
