Pick Analysis. Junior. player. 814. Scouting Report. Offensive Lineman. Cade Mays. 1

There is only one player we know for a 100 percent fact, provided he stays healthy, will eventually be a major rotational player for Tennessee football. That player is Cade Mays, who transferred to the Vols from the Georgia Bulldogs.

Once a five-star lineman, Mays is the son of UT lineman Kevin Mays, who played for the Vols in the early 1990s. He was committed to Rocky Top as a five-star in the 2018 class. However, after the program fell apart under Butch Jones, he withdrew his commitment and decided to join Kirby Smart at Georgia.

The Vols’ 2020 class added his younger brother, though, in four-star lineman Cooper Mays. That combined with some drama resulted in him transferring to UT as a junior guard, and he is seeking an eligibility waiver to play.

If Mays gets that waiver, he’ll immediately be a favorite to start at guard opposite Trey Smith with Brandon Kennedy in the middle and Wanya Morris and Darnell Wright on the outside. Even if he doesn’t get the nod, the 6’6″ 328-pound lineman will clearly be in the rotation alongside guys like Riley Locklear, Jerome Carvin, Jahmir Johnson and K’Rojhn Calbert. He can play guard or tackle.

An eligibility waiver is irrelevant to Mays being atop this list as well. Even if he doesn’t get it, well, Smith, Kennedy, Locklear and Johnson will be gone after 2020, so Mays will almost certainly start for Tennessee football in 2021. As a result, he is easily UT’s top transfer.
