If there are no transfers and no decommitments, Kaidon Salter’s commitment alone means Tennessee football will be heading into the 2021 offseason with a wide open quarterback race. This will likely be a race for the ages as well, one that will require a ton of evaluations from Jeremy Pruitt Jim Chaney and Chris Weinke.
After all, the race will include two pure drop-back passers in JT Shrout and Harrison Bailey, a pocket passer who can use his mobility in Brian Maurer and two dual-threat quarterbacks in Salter and Kasim Hill. If Jimmy Holiday, an athlete, spends time at quarterback, it means a six-man race with three dual-threat quarterbacks.
Simply put, all different types of players will be competing at the position. As a result, the Vols don’t need to spend time trying to add more quarterbacks to their 2021 class. They have other areas of focus they need to commit to in order to make sure it remains in the top five. For right now, there is nothing to worry about at quarterback. Quality, variety and depth are all there.
Prediction
Because of how loaded Tennessee football is at quarterback, it’s almost certain that nobody else will commit to Rocky Top for 2021. They have no reason too. None of the other quarterbacks being targeted have top-notch talent, so they will be going to a program where they are almost sure not to start or ever play. Salter is all UT will have at quarterback next year, and that’s fine for them.
