VFL Films is handling the upcoming documentary on the Tennessee football Volunteers legend.

One of the things many Tennessee football fans have to look forward to Friday is the upcoming segment of time on ESPNU blocked off in dedication to Johnny Majors. It’s the perfect thing for people on Rocky Top to watch while there is still no sports.

The channel will air the 1990 Vols’ comeback Sugar Bowl win over the Virginia Cavaliers at 6 p.m. ET and Majors’ national championship win with the Pittsburgh Panthers over the Georgia Bulldogs at 9 p.m. ET. However, what comes on in between is the story.

At 8 p.m. ET, a documentary on the Tennessee football player and coach entitled “Johnny Majors: Straight Ahead” will air. VFL Films is producing the documentary, and it released a trailer on the UT athletics Twitter page Thursday. Take a look at it here.

Obviously, this will be an inspiring story. It’s not the first time UT legends have had documentaries on ESPN. There have been multiple features on Peyton Manning, and nearly a decade ago, quarterback Condredge Holloway had one entitled “The Color Orange.” There was even a 30-for-30 on Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld.

However, this one means a bit more, and the trailer does a good job exciting fans for what is coming. Majors, who passed away on June 3, left a lot of great memories as an All-American and Heisman runner-up on the 1956 SEC Championship team and then as a 16-year head coach who won three SEC titles with the Vols.

What stands out the most was Majors leaving a national championship program at Pitt to rebuild his alma mater when it had completely sunk to irrelevancy. Things like that are what make him such a legend.

Majors’ contributions to Tennessee football and to the sport as a whole are clear, as that trailer already showed. There’s a reason he’s in the College Football Hall-of-Fame. This trailer only makes the upcoming documentary even more exciting.
