Sept .19 – Ole Miss Rebels (Game Three)

Game that’s replaced: Furman Paladins

Now that we have the inexperience advantage game out of the way for Tennessee football, we look at the worst teams they could play. The Vols already face the Arkansas Razorbacks. One of the other bottom teams, though, will be the Ole Miss Rebels. And under new head coach Lane Kiffin, they will be looking to make a splash.

More from Vols Football

Ole Miss returns a lot of starters, but that’s irrelevant because they are going through a coaching change. Due to that coaching change, UT wants to play them early in the season. Kiffin’s system is somewhat of a departure from Matt Luke’s, and his players will need time to adjust. That will take more time than just new players being thrust into a familiar system.

It’s no secret, by the way, that the Vols would want to play Ole Miss. They want to finally get revenge on Kiffin as a head coach for leaving them over a decade ago, something they have not been able to do. However, Vol fans should remember how much better that one team under Kiffin got as the season went on. He’s great at X’s and O’s, and as his teams develop, they get scary.

Taking that into account, facing Ole Miss early in the season would work for the Vols. They don’t have to be the opener, though, because adjusting to first-year head coaches usually lasts the entire month of September. The Furman Paladins would be the more desirable opponent. But for a third game, UT has the advantage here.
