The rising redshirt sophomore defensive back is leaving the Tennessee football Volunteers.

It looks like Tennessee football is losing another player in the secondary. After two years with the program, Brandon Davis announced over the weekend that he is leaving the Vols and entering the transfer portal.

Once a two-star recruit at cornerback on Rivals, Davis was a member of Jeremy Pruitt’s first class on Rocky Top in 2018 and came out of Louisiana. He took a redshirt his first year with the program, when UT had a 5-7 season.

At 5’10” 160 pounds, the rising redshirt sophomore who is from New Orleans and went to John Curtis High School in River Ridge, La. then only appeared in one game in 2019, against the UAB Blazers. He announced his decision to leave Tennessee football on Twitter Saturday.

Given the limited amount of experience he had, Davis is not likely to be a huge loss for the Vols. After all, he was buried in the depth chart, and while there was a chance Pruitt saw something in him nobody else did, it was hard to see him getting much playing time this year.

However, the future was a bit of a different story. Nickel Shawn Shamburger is a senior, as is Baylen Buchanan, assuming he can play this year. Meanwhile, Bryce Thompson and Alontae Taylor are both juniors who could leave early after this year. Thompson is likely to if he keeps up the play he’s had the past two years.

Taking that into account, Pruitt and Derrick Ansley will have lots of openings in the secondary in 2021, and Davis could have been an experienced player by then to provide depth. However, he probably wants to see more playing time, and nobody can blame him for that.

It will be interesting to see where Davis ends up, but Tennessee football fans should all wish him the best. Just because things didn’t work out for him on Rocky Top doesn’t mean he can’t have a great career elsewhere, and everybody should root for him and whatever decision he makes.
