Tennessee football 2020 preview by position: Vols QBs
Final take
There’s no doubt that Tennessee football is much more loaded at quarterback this year than last year. The Vols have gone from only one player with any experience playing a snap of college ball to four players with starting experience at the Power Five level.
Taking that into account, Rocky Top has a lot to be excited about at the position heading into Jeremy Pruitt’s third year. The increased stability with Jim Chaney, Tee Martin and Chris Weinke all returning in their respective roles is huge as well.

As for the players, Jarrett Guarantano is clearly the favorite to start. He has the most proven experience and has earned that right. UT’s season could come down to whether or not he’s able to maintain that spot, though, especially with the losses of Jauan Jennings, Marquez Callaway, Dominick Wood-Anderson and even Tyler Byrd.
Behind Guarantano, Kasim Hill, Harrison Bailey and Brian Maurer are all in competition for the No. 2 spot. JT Shrout isn’t likely to get it, as he was the No. 3 quarterback last year with just Maurer on the ticket. However, this will be an interesting battle on its own, especially with the prospect of Bailey living up to his hype and giving Guarantano a major push.
Maurer and Jimmy Holiday make for two dual-threat guys on the roster while Guarantano, Hill, Bailey and Shrout make for four pro-style guys. In general, the Vols have depth, versatility and much more experience at the position. This is a battle not just for this year but for the future of the program when it comes to signal-callers.
Although people should expect Guarantano to go out with a bang, Tennessee football’s recent history suggests major competition. That could be good for him. What’s clear is that the play at the position should be much better this season.
