829. Pick Analysis. 1. player. Scouting Report. Alabama. 14th year (25th overall). Nick Saban

Record at Alabama: 152-23 (86-15); Overall record: 243-65-1

In case you missed it, another Nick Saban protege was added to the ranks of SEC coaches this year. He’s coached in the SEC before, ironically with Tennessee football, but now he’s coaching there having been a Saban assistant. We’re talking, of course, about Lane Kiffin.

More from All for Tennessee

By joining the Ole Miss Rebels, Kiffin is the fifth former Saban coordinator as an SEC coach now. He joins Tennessee football’s Jeremy Pruitt, Jimbo Fisher of the Texas A&M Aggies, Kirby Smart of the Georgia Bulldogs and Will Muschamp of the South Carolina Gamecocks. This stands out for why Nick Saban is the best coach in the SEC.

Okay, the national championships at two different schools and six titles overall also have a major role in that. Saban is in the conversation for the greatest coach ever, and by that standard alone, he’s easily the best current coach in the SEC. Even as other coaches begin to build up their profile, Saban towers over all of them with his dominance.

Despite all of that, though, something is on the line this year. If the Alabama Crimson Tide don’t win a national championship, it’ll be the first time since Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa that he went three years without a national title. He hasn’t gone three years without one at the college level at one school since before he won his first title with the LSU Tigers in 2003.

Of course, while adding to his resume, he also continues to resurrect coaches, and he may do it with former Tennessee football head coach Butch Jones as he did it with Derek Dooley. These new challenges are the only question of his career. He’ll never lose this top spot in these rankings for as long as he’s coaching.
