Tennessee football: Ranking 2020 games by importance
2. Oct. 17 – Kentucky Wildcats
More important than likely wins, likely losses, circled wins or circled losses are the toss-up games. Tennessee football right now has three likely or certain wins and five likely or certain losses. If the Vols are to have a winning record, they need to make sure they run the table on likely wins and also win both toss-up games.

The Kentucky Wildcats are the first toss-up game. They are the fourth game of the year, sandwiched right between the Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide. However, despite those two games, it’s more essential that Jeremy Pruitt’s team maintains its focus for Mark Stoops’ team. This is one they have to win.
Kentucky will be a good team this year, and many advanced metrics show they will be better than the Vols, even without Lynn Bowden Jr. The return of Terry Wilson gives them a huge boost, and Stoops has proven that this program is not going anywhere. There’s a good chance the winner of this game finishes third in the SEC East, which is the goal for UT this year.
Of course, as already mentioned, UK being an East team also makes this game important, and in some ways, they are a rivalry. Altogether, that puts this game near the top of this list. UT has a history of owning Kentucky, but every year is different, and they barely got away with a win last year in Lexington. They must take this game seriously at all costs.
