Three years after that huge win over the Georgia Bulldogs, Tennessee football was off and running under Phillip Fulmer. The year before, they had gone 8-4, but a young quarterback in Peyton Manning, part of Fulmer’s first full recruiting class in 1994, raised expectations for 1995. Ray Goff, meanwhile, was on the hot seat in his seventh year at UGA after it went 6-4-1 in 1994.

More from Vols Football

The Vols had beaten the Dawgs in three straight seasons and had won four straight dating back to 1989. They came into this game ranked No. 8 with a 1-0 record after blowing out the East Carolina Pirates 27-7. Georgia, meanwhile, blew out the South Carolina Gamecocks 42-23, setting the stage for a nationally televised night game on ESPN.

In a back and forth game, Manning and running back Jay Graham, with a lot of help from a veteran offensive line, had a major offensive shootout with Georgia. This game was a classic, and with the score tied at 27 with under 90 seconds to go, UT had the ball on its own 36-yard line. Graham took a Manning swing pass 30 yards. Manning then hit Joey Kent for seven yards.

Graham then gained 14 yards on two more handoffs, and freshman Jeff Hall came in to kick the game-winner from just over 30 yards out. The Vols won 30-27. They lost to the Florida Gators the next week but won the rest of the way to finish 11-1 and in the top three. Georgia stumbled to 6-6, and Goff was replaced by Jim Donnan the next year.
