- Tennessee: No. 17 AP and Coaches
- Georgia: No. 3 AP and Coaches
After dominating the Georgia Bulldogs in the 1990s, Mark Richt turned the tables in the 2000s. UGA had won four straight over Tennessee football by 2004, and the previous two games had decided the winner of the SEC East, with Georgia winning both and capturing the SEC title in 2002. This year, the Vols were considered a rebuilding team with Casey Clausen gone.

Meanwhile, UGA had national title aspirations with senior quarterback David Greene and other stars like David Pollack. Despite UT beating the Florida Gators early in the year, they entered as double-digit underdogs, having lost 34-10 to the Auburn Tigers the week before while Georgia blew out the defending national champion LSU Tigers 45-16.
That week combined with the four-game streak is why it seemed so obvious the Dawgs would win. However, UT linebacker Kevin Burnett pledged that the Vols would see Auburn again in the SEC title game, meaning they would win the East and win this game. Somehow, he followed through, and they did just that.
In his first road start, freshman quarterback Erik Ainge threw two touchdown passes, giving the Vols a 19-7 lead late. UGA cut it to 19-14 and had one final drive to win the game, but they ran out of time, and with one second left, Greene’s pass into the end zone was intercepted. As a result, the Vols scored a huge upset, which led to them going 10-3 and winning the East.
