Filling in for Shawn Shamburger at STAR against the Arkansas Razorbacks, Theo Jackson led Tennessee football with 10 tackles, eight of which were solo, in the 24-13 loss. That was a career high for the senior.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Shamburger, who did not travel with the team to Fayetteville, Ark., won’t be expected to play for the remainder of the season to focus on academics. As a result, that position is open again.

Jackson’s performance in puts him up to 16 tackles on the year to go along with a fumble recovery and an interception. He and the rest of a UT secondary that has seriously struggled this year could have yet another matchup problem on Saturday.

Auburn, who lines up in a variety of offensive sets, plays a majority of their receivers both in the slot and outside. Their top receivers, Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz, have lined up at both positions this season, racking up 511 yards and 422 yards respectively.

Schwartz, who ran a 4.27 40-yard dash in high school, takes the majority of snaps as Auburn’s inside slot receiver and possesses speed that the Vols haven’t had to deal with yet. Mix in him and Williams taking turns on the inside, paired with stopping Tank Bigsby on the run, and it could be an eventful Saturday for Jackson.

With Shamburger out for the year, it looks like Tennessee football’s nickel spot is Jackson’s for the taking. We saw how true freshman Doneiko Slaughter looked filling in for Shamburger at the South Carolina Gamecocks, and with Jackson’s performance against Arkansas, look for him to take meaningful snaps on Saturday.
