Tennessee football: Five Auburn Tigers to watch for against Vols

Plenty of people have stepped up for the Auburn Tigers’ defense at different times. None have done what Roger McCreary has done, though. He’s this unit’s top producer, and he’s also Tennessee football’s biggest matchup problem.

For the year, McCreary is the only guy on Auburn’s defense with two interceptions. He has also broken up three passes and forced a fumble, causing three turnovers on the year when nobody else has caused more than one.
Meanwhile, McCreary has proven he can play physical, as he has five tackles for a loss on the season, which is second on the team only behind Colby Wooden. He has 26 tackles overall, 22 of which have been solo. In all but one game, he either forced a turnover or had a tackle for a loss.
Given the Vols’ issues at taking care of the ball, McCreary could become their biggest nightmare. He is a guy who could force a Jarrett Guarantano fumble or intercept one of his passes, and Guarantano is prone to mistakes on both fronts.
A product of Williams High School in South Alabama, McCreary is the top cornerback in a secondary that appears to be getting better each week with a couple of exceptions. He continues to leap off the screen.
We still don’t know who will play quarterback yet for Tennessee football, but whomever gets the start will have to account for McCreary. He’s an elite talent and will be a force on the field Saturday in some way, so watch out.
