The SEC has delayed Saturday’s Tennessee football Volunteers’ matchup.

On Monday morning, a COVID outbreak led to the cancelation of two men’s Tennessee basketball games and one Tennessee Lady Vols game this week. Now, Tennessee football is having to postpone another matchup.

In order to make room for other rescheduled games, the SEC announced that the Vols’ Saturday matchup at the Vanderbilt Commodores has been postponed. This is to make room for Vanderbilt’s game against the Missouri Tigers, which was postponed back on Oct. 17.

Mizzou and Vanderbilt are facing off due to the fact that this week’s game between the Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks has now been postponed. This was a way to assure that every team would still be able to play all 10 games on their schedules, assuming games are made up on Dec. 19, the same day as the SEC Championship game.

More from Vols Football

This is the second time in three weeks Tennessee football had a game postponed. The Vols’ Nov. 14 matchup with the Texas A&M Aggies was also postponed due to a COVID outbreak, and it’ll mark the third off-week for Rocky Top since Oct. 31.

As of this announcement, the Vols are scheduled to face the Florida Gators on Dec. 5. They will then face Texas A&M on Dec. 12. It’s assumed that their rescheduled matchup with Vandy will take place on Dec. 19.

Although the league has approved Dec. 19 as a make-up date, it announced that the Arkansas-Missouri and UT-Vandy games would be evaluated. Given the fact that none of those teams will be playing for the SEC title, it makes sense to set that as the date for these games.

Either way, this means Tennessee football just lost its best chance at ending this losing streak. If it does face Vanderbilt Dec. 19, it will have to face two top 10 teams before then, potentially top five teams. As a result, 2-7 is on the table by the time they visit the Commodores in Nashville.
