Toney is a speedy guy who can line up at wideout or in the slot. That’s exactly the type of receiver who has torched the Vols’ secondary this year, but they are usually No. 2 receivers. As the No. 1 receiver for the Gators, Toney is even a bigger threat to UT. He’s a repeat of what Shi Smith of the South Carolina Gamecocks did to the Vols in the opener when he had 140 yards and a touchdown.
So far this year, Toney has 45 receptions for 541 yards and seven touchdowns, and he also has 13 carries for 83 yards and another touchdown. True to Dan Mullen’s system of lining up his best weapons everywhere, the guy also has a punt return touchdown.
Simply put, Toney is a guy who does it all, and he’s got a Heisman Trophy candidate throwing him the ball while all the attention is focused on his teammate, who is a tight end. Everything is in place for him to have the game of his lift against the Vols, and Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley will have a brutal time trying to contain him.
The question at this point is just how dominant Toney will be in this game. Tennessee football has no hope of stopping him given the way its secondary has played all year, but if it could limit him somewhat, there may be a chance of making this game respectable.
