Coaching grades

Offensive play-calling: C

Jim Chaney was limited with what he could work with, but once again, he gave his quarterbacks very few chances to air it out and use their size advantages at receiver. Even with backups in there, Tennessee football’s offense could have been a lot more aggressive.

Chaney’s continual inability to pick up blitzes makes it worse. However, we give this an average grade because of the limited chances he had. Lack of practice opportunities the past few weeks and being short-handed on the offensive line significantly hampered what he could do.

Defensive play-calling: C

In many ways, Derrick Ansley was limited like Jim Chaney. The surprise dismissal of Kivon Bennett in the middle of the week hampered what he would be able to do in the pass rush, and we give him a break on that.

However, consistent issues with third down defense, particularly on 3rd and long plays, could not be ignored. Every time Dan Mullen called a screen, it seemed as if he caught Ansley off-guard. We give him an average grade, though, because his unit did stop the Florida Gators multiple times.

Overall coaching grade: C-

Lack of aggression and motivation from the players was blatantly clear. Also, Jermey Pruitt’s substitution decisions were questionably, including leaving Warren Burrell in the game over Alontae Taylor for significant periods of time.

Still, Pruitt was limited just like every other coach was given Tennessee football’s issues the past two weeks. As a result, we still give him a grade that is just barely average. There were issues beyond what just went into Saturday and how he coached on the field.
