Tennessee football: Five Vols to watch for against Vanderbilt
5’11” 205 pounds; Hometown: Nashville, Tenn.
Though it was Eric Gray who exploded for a career-high performance last year against the Vanderbilt Commodores, it was Ty Chandler who led the Vols in rushing last week. He even added another rushing touchdown to his 2020 stats.

Chandler strung together 64 all-purpose yards against the Florida Gators on 12 carries and one reception. In the Vols’ previous matchup against the Auburn Tigers, Chandler rushed for 40 yards and caught for 37. Had Gray not completely overshadowed him these last two weeks, it would be hard not to peg Chandler as one of UT’s top offensive leaders.
While history and recent stats suggest it’ll be Gray with the resounding output on Saturday, there’s no reason to look away when Chandler is toting the rock. It appears he’s healed well from the injury he suffered in early November against the Arkansas Razorbacks, earning 21 carries over Tennessee football’s last two games and averaging 4.3 yards per carry over that span.
Facing a Vanderbilt defense that allows 188 yards per game suggests UT’s backfield will be fairly diverse come Saturday, meaning Chandler, who has more than earned his carries as a four-year member of the program, will be given his fair share of opportunities to break explosive plays. Look for him to put together yet another impressive week as an asset in the run and pass games.
