Just as we mentioned, Eric Gray had his freshman year breakout game in 2019 against Vandy. Although you can argue Jalin Hyatt had a breakout game of his own against the Alabama Crimson Tide, he’ll be the freshman to watch come Saturday.

Hyatt set a career-high in receptions with four last week against the Florida Gators, but he finished the game with only 10 yards to show for his efforts. To be fair, Velus Jones Jr. was the only receiver to put up big yardage last week.
On an interesting note, following weeks Hyatt goes for 10 yards or less, he responds with 30 or more yards. His 87 yards and a touchdown against the Alabama Crimson tideAlabama came after he netted negative six receiving yards against the Georgia Bulldogs.
Stats suggest Hyatt’s trend of elevator game logs will continue on Saturday against a Vanderbilt Commodores secondary guilty of allowing 292 passing yards per game – one of the worst rates in all of college football.
We saw the Vols’ passing game begin to click – albeit in garbage time – during their loss to UF with J.T. Shrout in the game. Who’s to say that success can’t transition over to this weekend against a weaker defense?
As dynamic as Jalin Hyatt has been this season, he only has 188 yards and one touchdown to show for it all. You have to think he’ll want to close out his freshman year with Tennessee football on a high note. Look for Hyatt to create some fireworks in Nashville this weekend.
