Harrison Bailey and J.T. Shrout both threw the ball relatively well throughout the day for Tennessee football. However, in the process, the Vols receivers finally emerged and reached their potential, even if it was against the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Jalin Hyatt could have made this list, as he had 5 receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown. Josh Palmer had 4 receptions for 53 yards, and tight end Princeton Fant even had a 6-yard touchdown catch. Simply put, lots of players on the receiving side showed up in this game to help the young quarterbacks, and they all deserve to be named.

However, none of them stand out like Velus Jones Jr. The graduate transfer from the USC Trojans has really emerged in recent weeks, and he now has nearly 200 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns over the past two weeks. What he did against the Florida Gators wasn’t a fluke.

Jones caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Shrout in the second quarter to put the Vols in control of the game, as they went up 21-10. He then had a 74-yard touchdown reception on a pass by Bailey midway through the fourth quarter for the final score of the game, putting the Vols in even more control 42-17.

It didn’t matter who was throwing him the ball, Jones continued to prove himself to be Tennessee football’s best receiver down the stretch. He’s much more consistent than he was at the start of the year, and he was definitely the player of the game Saturday.
