Here is our preview for the Tennessee basketball Volunteers and the TTU Golden Eagles.

Coming off a historic defensive performance against the Appalachian State Mountaineers, Tennessee basketball returns to the court Friday evening for an in-state matchup. It’s only the Vols’ second game against a non-Power Five school this year.

UT will host the winless Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, who come into this game with an 0-7 record. The Vols come in still undefeated at 3-0 and ranked No. 10 nationally in both polls. Meanwhile, TTU comes in winless so far this season.

This game was initially scheduled to take place Saturday but was moved up so Rocky Top could host the Saint Joseph’s Hawks on Monday. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s matchup.

Led by second-year head coach John Pelphrey, Tennessee Tech is only averaging 59.7 points a game. Both leading scorers from last year’s team that went 9-22 and 6-12 in the Ohio Valley Conference are back.

As head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks from 2007 to 2011, Pelphrey is very familiar with the Vols and the SEC. He went 2-4 against UT during that time, all while Bruce Pearl was head coach, but did upset them in the 2008 SEC Tournament, when Rocky Top was the overwhelming favorite to win.

Pelphrey is actually 2-5 against the Vols all-time, as he also lost to them once as head coach of the South Alabama Jaguars in 2005 as well. Against Barnes, Pelphrey is 1-2, as Arkansas faced the Texas Longhorns three times from 2008 to 2011.

The last time the Vols faced Tennessee Tech was 2018, and they won 96-53. UT is 14-1 all-time against the program, losing once in 1996. Buzz Peterson’s first game as head coach on Rocky Top was a win over Tennessee Tech back in 2001. Ironically, Peterson had previously had a run with the program the Vols most recently beat, Appalachian State.
