The UNCG Spartans visit the Tennessee Lady Vols. Here is our women’s basketball Volunteers preview.

Coming off a huge upset win this past Thursday over the No. 15 ranked Indiana Hoosiers, the Tennessee Lady Vols return home Sunday to take the court once again. However, it’s not against the opponent they were originally scheduled to face on this date.

UT will host the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans. Initially, the Jackson State Tigers were set to head to Rocky Top, but COVID issues forced them to cancel their appearance. Kellie Harper’s team then found UNCG as a replacement.

On the heels of their first Power Five win, the Tennessee Lady Vols come into this game with a 4-1 record. Meanwhile, UNCG comes into the game with a 1-6 record, most recently losing 58-40 to the Elon Phoenix on Friday. Here is all the information you need for this matchup.

Led by fifth-year head coach Trina Patterson, UNCG is clearly going through a bit of a rebuilding phase. They had to replace four of five starters from last year’s team that went 23-9 and 10-4 in the Southern Conference, which led to Patterson earning Coach of the Year in the league, the second time she won that award.

Senior guard CeCe Crudup is the only returning player who averaged over four points a game last year. She averaged five and a half points. This year, she’s the only player averaging double figures, as she is scoring 10.7 points a game, and she also leads the team in rebounds with nearly six and a half a game despite being a 5’8″ guard.

Taking all of that into account, UNCG is clearly not the imposing challenger that Indiana was or maybe even Jackson State would have been. That they are coming off playing a game Friday means the deck is stacked even more against them.

After this game, the Tennessee Lady Vols will be off for more than a week. They won’t take the court again until Dec. 28, when they face the Lipscomb Bisons, and then they will begin SEC play on New Year’s Eve at the Texas A&M Aggies.
