Led by Billy Lange, who is in his second year as head coach of the program, Saint Joseph’s is struggling to improve from last year’s team that went 6-26 on the season and 2-16 in the Atlantic 10. They have had to replace three starters, to be fair, but second-leading scorer Taylor Funk is back after a season-ending injury that occurred seven games into last year.

This is the third meeting between the Vols and the Hawks. They met back during the Jerry Green years in a home and home in 1997-1998 and 1998-1999. UT won in Knoxville 74-54 the first year but lost in Philadelphia 55-53 the second year.

Saint Joseph’s is the third non-Power Five opponent in a row for the Vols, after they opened the season up against back to back Power Five opponents in the Colorado Buffaloes and the Cincinnati Bearcats. Their last two opponents have been the Appalachian State Mountaineers and TTU. UT has only allowed 50 or more points once this year, and they still haven’t allowed anybody to break 60.

Up next for Tennessee basketball is a Dec. 23 matchup with the USC Upstate Spartans. The Vols will then be off for a week before beginning SEC play on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the Missouri Tigers. Saint Joseph’s will be off for nine days after this game before beginning Atlantic 10 play against the VCU Rams.
