Led by third-year head coach Dave Dickerson, USC Upstate is having a disappointing winless start to a year in which it returned all five starters and its top eight rotational players overall from a last year’s team that went 13-20 overall and 7-11 in the Big South Conference. Only UNC Greensboro and the Georgia Southern Eagles have failed to beat them by double digits.
Coming into this game, the Vols have only allowed more than 60 points once so far this year and has one of the top-rated defenses in the country. However, USC Upstate’s issue is defense, as it allows 86 points a game, and UT has shown that it’s capable of scoring at a high level as well.
In the previous meeting between these two schools, the Vols won 74-65. That took place in November of 2013, which was the beginning of Cuonzo Martin’s final season on Rocky Top, one that saw UT make it to the Sweet 16. Ironically, Tennessee basketball’s next game after this one will be against Martin.
Rick Barnes’ team will have a week off and begin conference play at the Missouri Tigers on Dec. 30. USC Upstate, meanwhile, began Big South play in two games against the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday, Dec. 12 and Sunday, Dec. 13. They will continue conference play at the High Point Panthers on Wednesday, Dec. 30 and Thursday, Dec. 31 after this game.
