Here is our preview for the Tennessee basketball Volunteers’ visit to the Mizzou Tigers.

Taking the court for the first time in a week, Tennessee basketball has a major test in its return from Christmas. Ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll and No. 6 in the Coaches Poll, the Vols play their first ranked opponent, their first game on the road and their first SEC matchup of the year.

Coming off am 80-60 Dec. 23 win over the USC Upstate Spartans, UT will visit Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo. to face the Missouri Tigers, who are undefeated and ranked No. 12 in both polls. Just like Rocky Top, this is their first SEC game and their first game since being off for Christmas.

Led by former Tennessee basketball head coach Cuonzo Martin, Mizzou most recently beat the Bradley Braves 54-53 on Tuesday, Dec. 23. Here is all the information you need for Wednesday night’s matchup between the two schools.

More from All for Tennessee

After having their first four games canceled due to COVID, the Vols lost out on numerous opportunities to make statement wins, including canceled matchups against the No. 1 ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs and at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Their only two were at home against the Colorado Buffaloes and the Cincinnati Bearcats.

However, Missouri would be a gigantic statement win for them. Coming off a 15-16 campaign in 2019-2020, the team returned all but one player who started any games last year, Reed Nikko, who averaged fewer than five points a game.

This year, they have returned top seven scorers, including all three players who averaged double figures last year in Xavier Pinson, Dru Smith and Mark Smith. All three are once again averaging double figures. This experience is why they are off to a red-hot start, including scoring wins over the Illinois Fighting Illini and Oregon Ducks in Martin’s fourth year.

Martin coached the Vols from 2011 to 2014, immediately following Bruce Pearl. He led them to the Sweet Sixteen his final year there and then departed for the Cal Golden Bears, where he spent another three years, before taking the Mizzou job.

Since Martin returned to the SEC, Tennessee basketball is 3-1 against Mizzou with him as head coach and has won three in a row. Up next for the Vols after this matchup will be a return home to face the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, Jan. 2.
