After breaking a two-game losing streak with an ugly 56-53 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs earlier this week, Tennessee basketball has its third game against a ranked opponent this year Saturday night. The Vols will be looking to avenge last year’s loss in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

Heading into Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. are the Kansas Jayhawks. Ranked No. 15 in the AP Poll and No. 18 in the Coaches Poll, Bill Self’s team comes into this game after beating the TCU Horned Frogs 59-51 on Thursday.

Rick Barnes’ team, meanwhile, is ranked No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. UT will try to make it 2-1 against top 25 teams this year splitting the season with the Missouri Tigers. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s matchup.

This is Kansas’ first trip to Rocky Top since January of 2010, when they were ranked No. 1 and suffered a shocking upset loss to a Bruce Pearl led team that had four scholarship players out, including one of the leading scorers, Tyler Smith, being dismissed. Since then, Kansas has won three straight against UT, including each of the past two season.

Last year, these two teams met in Lawrence, Kan. in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, with the Jayhawks winning 74-68. The season before that, Kansas won an 87-81 overtime matchup in Brooklyn in the NIT Season Tip-Off Finale. After that loss, though, the Vols went on a 19-game winning streak and reached No. 1 for three weeks.

In addition to Tennessee basketball losing three straight to Kansas, Barnes has lost five straight to Self dating back to his time with the Texas Longhorns, so he has a personal streak to end. His last win over Self was an 81-69 home victory in early February of 2014.

Overall, the Vols are 1-4 all time against Kansas, as they first met in 2009, with the Jayhawks winning 92-85. That game was also at Kansas. In the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, meanwhile, the Vols are 4-2 all time. Their last win was 2019 over the West Virginia Mountaineers, and it took place the first week they were ranked No. 1. Here is the full nine-game challenge schedule.

Led by Self in his 18th year, Kansas is having to offset the losses of Devon Dotson and Udoka Azubuike to the NBA from last year’s team that went 28-3 and would have been the favorite to win the National Championship had the NCAA Tournament taken place. However, they returned three starters and have a ton of new talent, so they still have plenty of potential.
