2. Quarterback: B+

Number of signees: 1

Let’s start with the losses. Tennessee football was hit with the transfer of Jarrett Guarantano to the Washington State Cougars and J.T. Shrout to the Colorado Buffaloes. Adding to this, Kasim Hill, who was a walk-on and eligible, transferred before the year started.

However, Hill never played. The Vols still have Harrison Bailey and Brian Maurer. They added Virginia Tech Hokies graduate transfer quarterback Hendon Hooker, giving them two dual-threat quarterbacks and one drop-back passer, all of whom have starting experience at this level. Then they added an elite prospect in their recruiting clas.

Given what they added, Kaidon Salter alone pushes this grade to a B+. A four-star across all services, Salter is another dual-threat quarterback. Standing somewhere between 6’1″ and 6’2″ and weighing somewhere between 180 and 185 pounds, Salter is a star out of Cedar Hill High School in Cedar Hill, Texas who could make an immediate impact.

With just that addition, the Vols are set at quarterback entering this offseason. An epic quarterback battle is expected to take place in the spring, and Salter gives Josh Heupel early options on that front. As a result, his commitment makes this one of the best position units in Rocky Top’s class.
