In the midst of a two-game losing streak, the Tennessee Lady Vols return home to take the court again for their third of four straight games against top 25 opponents. They would have had five games in 11 days had a Tuesday night matchup at the Mississippi State Bulldogs, a make-up game, not been postponed due to inclement weather.

Anyway, ranked No. 21 in both polls, Kellie Harper’s team has its second straight game against a top 10 foe after losing Sunday 80-70 at the Texas A&M Aggies, who are ranked No. 5 in both polls. Now, the South Carolina Gamecocks, ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll and No. 3 in the Coaches Poll, head to Rocky Top for a crucial SEC showdown.

After losing a 63-59 heartbreaker at the now-No. 1 ranked UConn Huskies two weeks ago, South Carolina has gotten back on a winning streak, beating the Missouri Tigers last Thursday and LSU Tigers last Sunday. Here is all the information you need for the Tennessee Lady Vols’ matchup in Knoxville, Tenn. at Thompson-Boling Arena Thursday night.

Under 13th-year head coach Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks haven’t missed a beat. They likely missed out on a second national championship last year after COVID shut down the season despite them finishing 32-1, 16-0 in the SEC and winning the SEC Tournament Championship.

This year, despite losing two starters from last year’s team to the professional ranks in Mikiah Herbert Harrigan and Tyasha Harris, they’ve been able to maintain their dominance with the return of Aliyah Boston, Zia Cooke and Brea Beal. Cooke and Boston are both averaging double figures.

Also, the emergence of Destanni Henderson and Victoria Saxton, who are averaging 12 and 10 points a game respectively, has helped. Both were role players off the bench last year who have now turned into starters.

The Tennessee Lady Vols haven’t beaten South Carolina since 2018, when they swept the Gamecocks in the regular season. However, USC was without the National Player of the Year that season, A’ja Wilson, both times. With Wilson, they won a third match over Holly Warlick’s team in the SEC Tournament by 11. Last year, in her first year on Rocky Top, Harper lost 69-48 to USC.

UT will travel to Athens, Ga. Sunday after this game to take on the Georgia Bulldogs, ranked No. 22 in the AP Poll and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll. The Gamecocks, meanwhile, will return home to Columbia, S.C. that same day to face the Kentucky Wildcats, ranked No. 17 in both polls.

This is the last chance for the Tennessee Lady Vols to split this four-game stretch. Their losses last week to Texas A&M and Kentucky before that got them off to a rough start, although they didn’t have Rennia Davis against Kentucky. If they could get this win, it would raise their profile dramatically and be the biggest of Harper’s tenure so far.
