Tennessee football trolled by Vols baseball with McDonald’s bag after HR
It looks like there’s a bit of hostility between athletics programs on Rocky Top. In their home opener Tuesday, a 21-1 win over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions, the Tennessee baseball program decided to troll the Tennessee football program after a home run.
The troll happened in the third inning. With one out and UT leading 1-0, designated hitter Max Ferguson hit a solo shot to left field to expand the Vols’ lead to 2-0 in Knoxville, Tenn. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
As he rounded the bases and headed home, Ferguson was met with the usual celebration from teammates. He was then handed a celebration prop before heading to the dugout: a McDonald’s bag. Jordan Crammer, weekend sports anchor for WATE, Knoxville’s local ABC affiliate TV station, captured the moment on Twitter.

There’s no way to see that and not assume it was on purpose. For context, Tennessee football was accused of handing recruits cash in McDonald’s bags, according to a report on the Dan Patrick Show that came out on Jan. 19, one day after Jeremy Pruitt was fired.
What other reason could UT baseball pick a McDonald’s bag? It’s just too coincidental. To be fair, there may be something deeper here that we don’t know about, and it could be about where Tony Vitello’s loyalties lie.
Remember, Vitello was hired by John Currie. As a result, when Phillip Fulmer engaged in a mutiny against Currie to become the new athletic director and then make the decision to hire Pruitt back in 2017, Vitello may have taken Currie’s side.
This could also be a double troll, to be fair. In Tennessee football’s final season under Butch Jones, whom Currie fired in November of 2017, the Vols used a trash can as a prop to hold up whenever they got a takeaway. It was revealed in their opener against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to insane ridicule. Either way, the program’s troll job is interesting. You have to wonder the motives.
With this win, UT baseball improved to 4-0 on the year after sweeping the Georgia Southern Eagles this past weekend. Ranked No. 16 nationally, the Vols will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff again on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. ET. They’ll then have a day off before hosting the Indiana State Sycamores in a three-game series over the weekend.
