Coming off an ugly win at the Vanderbilt Commodores earlier this week in which Vandy didn’t have its two leading scorers, Tennessee basketball looks to put together a two-game winning streak for the first time in over two weeks. In the process, they’ll have to beat a team and a coach that has plagued them in recent years.

UT travels to Auburn Arena in Auburn, Ala. to take on the Auburn Tigers and their former head coach, Bruce Pearl. Ranked No. 25 in the AP Poll and unranked in the Coaches Poll, Rick Barnes’ program is looking for its first win over Auburn since 2017.

Pearl’s team comes in on a three-game losing streak, most recently losing by 17 points to the Florida Gators on Tuesday. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s Saturday afternoon matchup.

16-6 (9-6). 534. 525. Tennessee -7.5; Over/Under 142. 12 p.m. ET. ESPN. Saturday, Feb. 27. 11-13 (5-10)

More from All for Tennessee

This is obviously a down year for Auburn after a regular season SEC title, an SEC Tournament title, a Final Four appearance, three NCAA Tournament appearances and three top 25 finishes over the past three years. Losing all five starters from last year’s team and accepting a postseason ban this year due to NCAA violations will do that.

However, it’s hard to have any faith in the Vols to win this game the way they should. First off, just a week ago, they suffered an embarrassing home loss to John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats, who are currently 8-13.

Also, Pearl’s ownership of Rocky Top in recent years makes it hard to have faith. Auburn has won all five meetings over the past three years. The first win of this streak cost UT the outright regular season SEC Championship.

One year later, Auburn beat the Vols on the final day of the regular season to cost them a share of the regular season SEC Championship. The next week, they dominated UT in the SEC Tournament Championship game to cost the Vols the SEC Tournament title.

Last year, they swept Rocky Top, when one win by the Vols would have had them likely in the NCAA Tournament heading into the SEC Tournament. We never found out how truly costly that was, though, as postseason play was canceled due to COVID. Simply put, Pearl currently owns Barnes, and UT’s recent struggles put this game in question.

After this game, Tennessee basketball will be off for a week before closing out the regular season Sunday, March 7 against the Florida Gators. Auburn will visit the Alabama Crimson Tide on Tuesday, March 2 and close out the regular season against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday, March 6.
