Tennessee football: New off-field coach Jacob Bronowski checks key boxes
When you target off-field analyst, there are many routes you can go, but one of the most common is to find young, up and comers who have a deep understanding of the game. On that front, Tennessee football found a guy who brings a stellar track record at lower levels.
John Brice of Football Scoop reports that Josh Heupel is adding Jacob Bronowski into an off-field role. Bronowski spent the last year with Heupel as a special teams quality control assistant with the UCF Knights. A former walk-on quarterback for the New Mexico Lobos in 2013 with a background in offense and special teams, Bronowski will be a quality control coach.
Given his experience with Heupel, Bronowski checks major boxes that will make him a major asset to Tennessee football. He has a level of familiarity with the staff, he has experience building programs, and he has a proven track record of production in his roles.
Before checking the familiarity box with Heupel, Bronowski was part of building two separate programs. In 2018, he joined first-year head coach Bernard Clark’s staff at the Robert Morris Colonials. He helped Robert Morris go 7-5 in 2019 for its first winning season in eight years.
From 2014 to 2017, he coached at New Mexico under Bob Davie’s staff. In 2015, New Mexico had its first winning season in eight years, going 7-6. The next year, they went 9-4 and captured a share of the Mountain West Conference Mountain Division title. Simply put, Bronowski has experience building programs that have been down, and Tennessee football needs that.

When you look at the roles Bronowski had, his success is even more impressive. As the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Robert Morris, he helped tight end Matthew Gonzalez accrue over 1,100 receiving yards in two years, leading the team in receiving each season. In 2019, the Colonials scored two touchdowns off blocked punts with him coaching special teams.
Bronowski was an assistant wide receivers and quarterbacks coach at New Mexico in 2016 and 2017. Davie ran the pistol-option, so there wasn’t much throwing, but the quarterbacks improving their reads and pitches with Bronowski, which helped the Lobos average over 100 rushing yards more a game and one and a have yards more per attempt from 2015 to 2016.
During that time, Bronowski was also a special teams graduate assistant, and in that field, Elijah Lilly had a kickoff return touchdown in both 2016 and 2017. We should note that Bronowski was a student assistant with the special teams staff in 2014 and 2015, and Carlos Wiggins had kickoff return touchdowns in both years while Ridge Jones had another one in 2014.

Simply put, Bronowski has overseen real success at all areas he has been responsible for coaching. That’s a big deal, and combined with his experience building a program and connection with Heupel, he brings a lot to Tennessee football. Add in all the film study he has been responsible for at every stop, and the Vols may have another rising star.
