Recruiting secondary players remains a focus for Tennessee football as Josh Heupel still looks for his first commitment of the 2022 class. On Thursday, the Vols found another window of opportunity there with an elite prospect from Mississippi who decommitted from the LSU Tigers back in December.

Khamauri Rogers, who is listed as a four-star cornerback across all recruiting services, announced that the Vols had made his top 10. Coming out of Holmes County Central High School in Lexington, Miss., Rogers stands somewhere between 5’11” and 6’1″ and weighs somewhere between 160 and 170 pounds.

In addition to Tennessee football and still LSU, Rogers had the Ole Miss Rebels, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Georgia Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, Miami Hurricanes, Oklahoma Sooners, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and UCF Knights on his list. He announced the schools on Twitter.

LSU had Rogers committed dating back to Nov. 24, 2019, as Ed Orgeron’s program was in the midst of its national championship run. He decommitted over a year later, on Dec. 17, 2020, two days before their final regular season game, a 53-48 win over Ole Miss, and just over a week after they announced a self-imposed bowl ban.

You have to wonder if that bowl ban had anything to do with Rogers’ decommitment. At the same time, Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin coaching his two home state schools could have simply peaked his interest a bit more.

It’s interesting to note that Rogers is eyeing UCF, the one non-Power Five school on his list. Obviously, that’s where Heupel just left. Does that have anything to do with a connection to Heuepel, which would put UT on the list as well, or is it about Gus Malzahn now being the head coach down there? We can’t say for sure.

What’s clear is that LSU and Ole Miss are still the overwhelming favorites. They are tied for the lead in the Rivals Future Cast. Ole Miss is No. 1, LSU is No. 2 and Miami is No. 3 in the 247Sports Crystal Ball. The Rivals Fan Future Cast favors Ole Miss by a majority. As a result, Tennessee football has some work to do to land this guy, but it’s intriguing that they made they cut.
