Believe it or not, Tennessee football’s top draft prospect Trey Smith helped himself the most of any of the draft-eligible players at Pro Day. Smith, who was widely regarded as a first-round talent after his junior season in 2019, elected to return to Knoxville for his senior year.

However, the script flipped on Smith in 2020. The Vols finished 3-7, Jeremy Pruitt’s staff was wiped clean, and the situation was in no way ideal for a future first-round pick. Still, Smith stayed with the program and participated in the Reese’s Senior Bowl following the conclusion of his farewell tour.

At UT’s Pro Day, Smith bench pressed 225 pounds 32 times and ran the 40-yard dash in 5.11 seconds. Teams that traveled to Knoxville to watch the former All-American offensive guard, included the New England Patriots, Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals among many others.

When asked what he believes he will bring to the NFL team that drafts him, Smith didn’t bother mincing words.

"“I’m definitely going to be a tone-setter. I’m going to be a guy that when things aren’t going our way, I’m trying to be the most violent dude out there. I’m trying to set the tone from play one to the end of the game. I’m going to try to be a mainstay on the offensive line for years and years and years to come. I’m not trying to give my position up either.”"

Vol fans have known Smith would be special from the day he stepped on Rocky Top as a green five-star recruit. He immediately became a star, earning All-SEC honors as a freshman. It’s exciting for many of them to finally watch his NFL dreams come to fruition.
