Despite no commitments for 2022, things continue to heat up on the recruiting trail for Tennessee football underway. With spring practice underway, Josh Heupel’s program is handing out offers, making cuts and scheduling visits.

On Monday, UT made the cut for a prospect from a surprise area. Kaden Helms, a tight end out of West High School in Bellevue, Neb., announced Rocky Top made his top 10. A three-star on Rivals and 247Sports, Helms stands 6’5″ or 6’6″ and weights somewhere between 220 and 225 pounds.

In addition to Tennessee football, Helms also had the Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, LSU Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes and Arizona State Sun Devils on his list. He announced the schools on Twitter.

Notably, Helms’ home state school, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, were not on his list. Given the presence of football in that state and its need to secure the few national prospects it has, that’s actually a bit shocking.

With Austin Pope and Princeton Fant entering their fifth-year senior seasons, tight end is a position where the Vols should be fine at this year but definitely need to recruit heavily for the future. Jacob Warren is a redshirt junior.

Miles Campbell was a solid addition in the 2021 recruiting class, and there’s a chance Trinity Bell plays there. However, Heupel definitely needs more depth. Sean Brown and Jackson Lowe entering the transfer portal hurt the program’s future at the position.

Helms would be the type of tight end to fit Heupel’s up-tempo spread offense. He’s not as big as the tight ends valued in the pro style but he’s got great height and could be a mismatch for numerous opponents.

Right now, there are no favorites to land him on the Rivals Future Cast. Nebraska is a plurality favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast, but they’re out. Oklahoma, however, has one 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction for him, and the expert is high on that pick. As a result, Tennessee football probably has an uphill battle to land Helms, but making this cut was impressive.
