Running back is a wide open position for Tennessee football entering 2021 given the transfers of Eric Gray and Ty Chandler, but there is a lot of young talent. Despite that collection of players, though, the Vols are still targeting players at the position for 2022. Josh Heupel has them on the radar of an elite prospect at the position out of Mississippi.

Branson Robinson, a four-star running back across all recruiting services, has the Vols in his top five. Coming out of Germantown High School in Madison, Miss., Robinson stands around 5’10” or 5’11” and weighs in the 220-pound range.

Joining Tennessee football on Robinson’s list are four powerhouse programs: the Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs and LSU Tigers. He announced the schools with a graphic on Twitter Friday afternoon.

UT being on the list with three schools who won a national title during the College Football Playoff era and another school that played for the title is pretty impressive. It also speaks to the allure of Rocky Top and playing in Heupel’s system.

Although the Vols are loaded with some young stars at the position, nobody is proven, and Tiyon Evans, a newcomer who could be the main back, is a junior college transfer anyway. As a result, Robinson could make an early impact if he chooses Big Orange Country.

One bit of good news for the Vols is that the Mississippi State Bulldogs were one of the leading candidates to land him based on the 247Sports Crystal Ball projections. As a result, them being left off the list clears one major hurdle.

However, Georgia is still the unanimous favorite on the Rivals Future Cast and the majority favorite on the 247Sports Crystal Ball and Rivals Fan Future Cast to land him. As a result, Tennessee football still has an uphill climb to land this guy, but just being on the list suggests there is something about the Vols that could be appealing.
